A trip to Srimangal and Sylhet offers quite a verities experiences within a short time. On this 10 days trip, you will explore the most picturesque green hilly areas covered by tea leaves, reserved rain forest, wildlife and bird sanctuaries, renowned waterfalls, haors, local lifestyle and culture of Sreemangal and Sylhet. Sylhet holds a spectacular variety of extraordinary landscapes, wildlife sanctuaries, marshy areas and vibrant lifestyles to explore. Sylhet and Srimongal lying in the northeastern part of Bangladesh, bordered by the Indian states of Meghalaya, Manipur and a tiny area of Tripura. It has got Khashia and Jayanta Hills in the north and the southeast of the Tora Hills. This area produces and exports a large quantity of high-quality tea, with low rolling hills carpeted by tea plantations, scattered patches of tropical forests, lemon & pineapple cultivation & orange groves and massive wetland marshes. The variety of countryside scenery inside Sylhet remains ripe for exploration.

The average rainfall in this part is higher than in the rest of Bangladesh, a fact that the British tea planters realized in the 18th century and started to cultivate tea in this part.

The area is temperate and cool with clean, crisp, fresh air in winter and is moderately warm in summer but has an annual rainfall of 5000mm, the highest in the country.

The Holy Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal and Hazrat Shah Paran, the 14th-century Sufi saint, is an important pilgrimage site for the Muslims in Sylhet town. The messianic Muslim saint is one of the earliest pioneers of Islamic culture in Bangladesh, responsible for mass conversions of Bengalis from Hinduism and Buddhism. This area has a population of Khashia, Pangou, Manipuri and Tripura ethnic communities, all living in villages around the hills and practicing Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity. Tripura, Khasia & Pangou people tend to skip regular contact with the outside world, occasionally venturing from their settlements. Exceptional “Manipuri” people have integrated into Bangladeshi society as artisans, business people and jewelers.

Srimongal, about 75 km south of Sylhet and 150 km northeast of Dhaka, is the tea capital of Bangladesh. This slightly hilly massive area covered by a green carpet of tea leaves is one of the most picturesque sights. Occasionally, the presence of lemon orchards, pineapple plantations, and rubber plantations makes this a perfect place for a visit. Also, the tropical forests, wildlife, bird sanctuaries, waterfall, and lakes are the attractions to keep you busy every day. This is a perfect holiday destination to enjoy nature and tranquillity.

Day 1: Train journey to Sreemangal, walking around the tea estates, fruits garden

You will be transferred to the Airport Train Station by 06:40 to avail Parabat Express train (ETD 6:52 AM) to Sreemangal (ETA 10:33). Upon arrival, meet and greet your guide and drive to the hotel/ resort. Fresh up, enjoy the serenity and relax at your hotel/ resort. After lunch, your guide will offer some walking activities around the nearby tea estates, fruit gardens and villages. Get back to your hotel before dark for a dinner and night stay. Sreemangal is a tea capital or land of two leaves and a bud, a synonym for the tea estates and the largest tea production. Sreemangal, about 75 km south of Sylhet and 150 km northeast of Dhaka, is about 4/5 hours of a pleasant train ride. A green carpet of tea leaves covers massive hilly areas is one of the most picturesque sights. Occasionally, the presence of lemon orchards, pineapple plantations, and rubber plantations makes this a perfect place for a visit and relaxation. Also, the tropical forests, wildlife, bird sanctuaries, waterfalls and lakes are potential attractions to keep you busy for few days. Sreemangal is a perfect holiday destination to enjoy tranquillity and nature. We usually use the Parabat Express train for this trip, and this train leaves six days a week except for Tuesday from Dhaka central station (Kamalapur). It is very convenient to take this train from Airport Train Station for those living in the northern part of Dhaka city (Uttara, Mirpur, Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara & DOHS area).

Day 2: Lawacharra National Park, Khashia Tribal village, bird watching trip to Baikka Beel

Your local guide will offer you a rewarding wildlife trek through the nearby Lawacharra National Park. Early morning is a good time to explore abundant and diverse wildlife. The Lawacharra forest is one of the last remaining tropical rainforests of the country and home to many endangered and rare species; Hollock Gibbons are one of the most prominent. A few hour's tracts through the dense forests are heaven for birdwatchers, naturalists and adventure seekers alike. After lunch, drive to Baikka Beel – a permanent wetland and bird sanctuary. Depending on the seasons, we offer either a boat trip (Summertime: April to September) on this marshland or a bird-watching (winter time: October to March) and a nature enjoying trip. It is a beautiful marshland where thousands of lilies and lotus bloom. Birdwatchers and nature lovers have begun frequenting it. An observation tower promises the visitors a good view of the beel, its residents and winter visitors. During the winter season, many migratory birds find their nesting ground at this place. Among many migratory birds, some species have found their home here for living & nesting permanently. Please note that around 3km road just before the wetland is in lousy condition, difficult to access by sedan cars but no problem for 4X4 driven vehicle (Jeep) or even minivans. Either we have to walk three kilometres or drive by a 4 X 4 vehicle (rainy season). Drive back to the resort for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Adventurous trekking to Ham Ham waterfall

We have to leave the hotel at 6 AM by reserved vehicle (CNG/TukTuk); it is about an hour and a half by reserved vehicle to reach Kolabon of Razkandi reserve forest in Kamalganj. We leave our vehicle behind and start 5/6 hours long up & downhill trekking through the sleeper streams and danced forest. It will be an actual adventurous trek back and forth. Proper preparation and carrying necessary trekking gear are essential besides carrying our dry foods and drinks. In case of any emergency, we have no options for seeking help from any locals because there is no habitation on our track. Same way, return to Sreemangal for an overnight stay at your hotel/ resort.

Day 4: Daylong Cycling or walking through the tranquility and homestay with a family

We shall leave the hotel after breakfast at 8:30 AM for a few hours cycling around. Tracking through beautiful tea estates, tea worker's villages, lakes, Pineapple, lemon, betel leaf, Rubber plantations, and rolling landscapes is an outstanding experience to cherish forever. Please note that our cycling route would be really off the beaten track, and cycles do not come with safety gear. We suggest you bring your own helmets and other safety gear for personal safety. Return to your hotel/ resort for lunch. Late in the afternoon, you will be transferred by reserved vehicle to a village near the Rema Kalenga Forest for a homestay with a local family. On arrival in the village, meet and greet the family. You may go for a little walk around the tribal village adjacent to the forest. Dinner and good night with the family.

Day 5: Remakalenga wildlife sanctuary and local village visit back to resort

This sanctuary is part of the Tarap Hill Reserve Forest, the largest remnant of upland natural forest in the country and lies adjacent to the Indian border area, near Satchhari National Park, with various plants, animals and birds and four different ethnic forest communities. The family will offer you an early breakfast; you may join the breakfast preparation with the family if you want to learn some typical Bangla recipes. Soon after breakfast, your guide will offer two/ three hours of trekking through this beautiful forest. Back to the host family for lunch. Drive back to Sreemangal for an overnight night stay at the hotel/ resort in Sreemangal.

Day 6: Travel to Sylhet train/ reserved vehicle and Sylhet City sightseeing in the afternoon

Leave Sreemangal after breakfast for Sylhet by reserved vehicle (2.5 hours) or by train. After the check-in formalities and a bit of rest, we would invite you on a City excursion. Today's excursion will include a visit to the holly Mausoleum of Hazrat Shah Zalal- who has brought Islam to this part of Bangladesh. Walking along with the Keane's Bridge neighbourhood and the old marketplace is interesting. In such a little place, so many things are happening simultaneously, which is fascinating to observe. Enjoy the sunset from the Keane's bridge over the Shurma River. It is nice to walk around the worker's residential colony, just on the other side of the Shurma River. Meeting friendly people is always lovely, learning their life stories can be a lesson for a lifetime. (These are just ideas of what we think you will be interested in! Please discuss with your guide what exactly you are interested to see. He has the right to make necessary adjustments on the itinerary to make the trip nicer). Overnight at the hotel (Shuktara/ Rose view/ Metro/ Nazimgarh resort) in Sylhet.

Day 7: Lalakhal and Jaflong

After breakfast, start for a full day excursion around Jaflong and Tamabil. Located amidst a splendid panorama, Tamabil is a border outpost on the Sylhet – Shillong Road (55 km from Sylhet City centre). Sights of the waterfalls over the hilly zone across the border add to the charming views. Jaflong is a picturesque spot nearby amidst tea estates and the beauty of rolling stones from hills. The hardship of primitive stone collector's is a darkness behind the beauty. We should probably meet these people and listen to their daily life struggles before complaining about our lives. After lunch at a local restaurant in Jaflong, drive to Lalakhal to enjoy a scenic and refreshing country boat cruise. Drive back to your hotel in the down for an overnight stay.

Day 8: Ratargul and bichanakandi

Ratargul is the only swamp forest in the country; this virgin locale was recently discovered and is now being conserved under the forest department. Rowing through the marshy land of the forest, one can see lush green all around and exotic breeds of flora and fauna. A perfect place to seek inner peace to rejuvenate your soul with renewed vigour. It is always good to visit a forest early in the morning, leave the hotel at 7 AM for Ratargul forest. About two hours driving distance from Sylhet city centre by reserved vehicle. Enjoy beautiful boating and trekking through the swamp forest for some hours. After lunch, we will visit Bichanakandi. Overnight stay in Sylhet.

Day 9: Overnight trip to Tanguar Haor in Sunamgonj

Approximately 70 km west of Sylhet, the remote township offers very much unique opportunities to explore Bangladesh's endangered haors (wetlands), some very special places where thousands of migratory birds make their winter stopovers, especially during mid-winter through to the end of March and even sometimes till the end of April. At this time migrants, winterers and residents all get together for one big bird party. This amazing back swamp is enriched with one of the unique wetland ecosystems in Bangladesh, hosting around a hundred and fifty different species of fish, more than hundreds of resident birds and around two hundred different types of flora. The haor is nestled by flirty six villages with around forty thousand people, all of whom are dependent on it for their livelihood. Drive to Tanguar haor by reserved car, embark on the houseboat for your overnight trip in this haor. All meals and accommodation will be on board.

Day 10: Tanguar haor – back to Sylhet train/ bus station or airport; fly to Dhaka

After a late breakfast on your houseboat, leave Tanguar Haor for Sylhet and avail your train/ flight/ bus to Dhaka.
